Athlete Profile: Stu McLay

Stu has been taking distance running more seriously since the beginning of 2015 after coming from a track and field background where he represented Australia twice internationally in competitions for athletes with a disability (T/F12 vision impaired).

In fact in 2011, Stu was awarded life membership at the prestigious Doncaster Athletics Club in Victoria.

Since joining Run2PB with a focus on road races and improving his 5km/10km and Half Marathon, Stu has been committed to the program and been rewarded.

Recently, he achieved his first goal with Run2PB of a sub 20 min 5km and is now aiming at that elusive sub 40 for 10 km, and perhaps a half marathon PB later in the year. In the meantime he’ll be running a number of events for Doncaster AC in the Athletics Victoria winter season.

Stu has ben a hallmark of consistency, his program has included a measured build up of base building, long runs, speedwork and getting his body robust to handle volume and mileage.

The month of May was a big breakthrough month for Stu, he lined up at the Puffing Billy Great Train Race in the hilly Dandenongs of Victoria and smashed his previous course best by over 3 and half minutes!

The next weekend, Stu jumped on the track and his form continued, showcasing he had both speed and strength, Stu went out on his home track of Doncaster and sliced a whopping 50 seconds off his 5K Track P.B.

What do you love about running?

Running distances provides me with some “quiet time”, a chance to think about things and be reflective. I find it therapeutic, both physically and mentally. It has also been a great way to spend extra time with his wife, primary aged son and their running friends.

In 2018, it was an incredible life experience to cross the finish line on the MCG last year holding hands with my wife for her first and my third marathon.

How Run2PB has assisted your training?

Run2PB and my Coach Zac keeps me honest. His expertise, motivation and encouragement are there for me every day. He knows exactly when to push me harder and change things a bit, but also understands me well and gets me back up after I have ‘one of those days’.

I’m loving the challenges and the hard work. Thanks to Run2PB I’m the fittest I’ve ever been.

Thanks Zac and Run2PB, you’ve shown me that these old legs can go faster after all.
